Key Stage 2 SATs
SATs (standardised assessment tests) take place for all children in Year 6, in May. These are national tests.
These tests in English and maths will reflect the national curriculum, and are intended to be rigorous. Click here for more information from the DfE.
At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in:
- Reading
- Maths (papers in arithmetic and reasoning)
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
These tests are set and marked externally; the results will be used to calculate your child’s progress and the school’s performance. Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment.
Writing is teacher assessed and moderated by the Local Authority regularly
Reading
The reading test is a single paper with questions based on one 800-word text and two passages of 300 words. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.
GPS
The grammar, punctuation and spelling test consists of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and an aural spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.
Mathematics
There are three papers in maths:

Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning, 40 minutes per paper
Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes (written)
The results that we achieve are often difficult to compare with National data for achievement, as a small school we are mindful of the nature of reporting data when cohort size can vary greatly from year to year and with it the % carried by each child. Data headlines therefore need to be understood in the context of individual children and the progress they make from their starting points.

We are very proud of the learners at St. Katharine’s who demonstrate exemplary attitudes to their learning and who understand that with effort and determination we can all make progress and ‘grow’ our abilities both now and in the future.

Phonics
At the end of Year 1 all children sit the phonics screener to check that they have a secure knowledge of the phonetic code needed for success in reading. Children who do not pass the phonics screener in Year 1 will be tested again in Year 2.
