An Introduction to the PTA

The PTA exists for a two primary reasons.  Firstly, by putting on various events at the school, we raise much needed funds to support the school. This enables the quality of the learning experience for all children, while they attend St Katharine’s, to be enhanced. Secondly, we provide an opportunity for children and parents to get together with the wider school family to develop and enhance relationships.

Very importantly, our PTA is all inclusive and as a parent at the school you are automatically a valid member. With the support of everyone we can and do make a real difference.

Current PTA Committee Members:

Salli Hudson: (Alfred Year 3, Poppy Year 1)

Hannah Woolven: (Eva Year 2)

Jo Hiller Culley: (Faye Year 3, Amelia Year 1)

Sally Ann Vessey Thompson: (Robyn Year 3, Ollie & Pippa Year 1)

Carla Watts: (Issey Year 3, Finn Year 2)

Sophie Marklew: (Harry Year 3)

Events

Some of the events that run each year include Bonfire Night, our Christmas Disco, May Fair, Jumble Sale and other smaller events like cake sales, Ice Cream Fridays and social events. Last year, to increase the amount we were able to give towards the 4th classroom, we staged our first ‘St. Katharine’s Fun Run’. This event was a great success and one that we were proud to add to our list – it was particularly great to reach so many members of the wider community in our efforts to raise much needed funds in support of the school.

As a PTA we also support open evenings, open mornings, provide refreshments for school events and do everything we can to work in partnership with the School enhancing their work and the experience for children both in and out of the school day.

Fundraising

The PTA work very closely with the School to define funding priorities that are identified in the School Development Planning process. These change from year to year. Historically we have supported school trips for each class, enabling pupils to go on trips to aquariums, museums, theatres and educational themed days to support relevant areas of the curriculum at a significantly reduced amount per parent. This ensures that everyone benefits from the money we raise. We provide refreshed literacy material each year and have also funded items such as Lego robotics and new playground equipment. We are usually able to donate between £4000 and £5000 per year but in 2016 we were able to donate an additional £9000 towards the build of the 4th Classroom, something we are all very proud of and couldn’t be done without each and every volunteer and parent supporter.

What you can do to get involved

We hold an annual AGM in September where we discuss both the previous year’s fund raising and the coming events. It is also where we nominate new committee members and say thank you to outgoing members. We usually combine this with a social element as well. Please watch out for details, we always need new volunteers, or just come along to find out a bit more.

Whilst being a member of the committee is a much needed and highly valued role we welcome any support that our parent group can give. This might include helping out at any of the events that we run each year, attending meetings, canvassing support within the local community, putting up banners and handing out flyers to advertise our work. Any help of any kind is always warmly welcomed. If you are new to school and want to get involved please don’t hesitate to approach on of our committee members to find out more about the work that we do.

The Facebook Page

The Facebook page is run by the PTA and endorsed by the school. It is a private group where we administrate members to ensure it is an appropriate and measured form of communication with our parent network. If you are a parent or carer, you can request membership to https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsofstkatharines/
